Micro-Needling
Micro needling is a minimally invasive procedure designed to stimulate collagen production within the skin. Essentially, it involves using a device with extremely fine, sterile needles – often just a few microns in diameter – to create tiny punctures in the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries trigger a natural healing response, prompting the body to generate new collagen and elastin, leading to improved skin texture, reduced scarring, and a more youthful appearance. It’s a versatile technique that can address a variety of skin concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scars and stretch marks.
Who is a candidate?
Dr. Van Laeken typically recommends micro needling for patients with mild to moderate skin concerns. Individuals with fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the forehead, lower face, mouth, and neck, often benefit from this procedure. It’s also a popular choice for those seeking to diminish the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, and surgical scars. However, it’s crucial to have realistic expectations – micro needling is best suited for addressing superficial skin imperfections rather than severe scarring. Patients with active acne, eczema, psoriasis, or significant sun damage may require further evaluation before candidacy is determined.
Preparation for surgery
Prior to your micro needling appointment, our nurses will conduct a thorough consultation to assess your skin type, discuss your goals, and determine if this procedure is appropriate for you. You’ll be instructed to avoid exfoliating treatments (like retinoids or chemical peels) for at least two weeks prior to the procedure to allow the skin to stabilize. Sun exposure should be minimized during this time. It’s also vital to inform your nurse of any medications you’re currently taking, as some may need to be adjusted before the procedure. Finally, you’ll be asked to refrain from alcohol consumption for 24 hours prior to your appointment.
Procedure
During the micro needling session, you’ll be comfortably positioned on a treatment bed. The nurse will cleanse the area to be treated and apply a topical anesthetic cream to minimize discomfort. Using a handheld device with multiple fine needles, she will firmly press the device across the skin, creating a series of micro-channels. The depth and density of needle penetration will be customized to your individual skin type and the specific concerns being addressed. The procedure typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes.
Recovery
Following micro needling, your skin may appear slightly pink or red for a few hours to a couple of days. You’ll be instructed to apply a soothing, hydrating moisturizer and avoid touching the treated area. Gentle cleansing with a mild cleanser is recommended. Sun protection is absolutely crucial – use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily. You may experience some mild flaking or peeling over the next few days, which is normal. Our nurse will advise you on the appropriate skincare routine to support optimal healing.
Potential Complications
While micro needling is generally a safe procedure, potential complications include redness, swelling, bruising, and pinpoint bleeding. In rare cases, infection or allergic reaction can occur. It’s also possible to experience excessive scarring or pigment changes, particularly in individuals with darker skin tones. Our nurses will take all necessary precautions to minimize these risks, but it’s important to be aware of them before proceeding with the procedure. Open communication and diligent adherence to post-operative instructions are key to a successful outcome.
