Lumps and Bumps

"Lumps and bumps" surgery involves minor, typically in-office procedure to remove benign, or sometimes, suspicious skin lesions like cysts, lipomas, moles, and skin tags. The procedure aims to minimize scarring and allows for rapid, often same-day, recovery with minimal downtime.

Who is a candidate?

Candidates for this type of minor surgery are generally healthy and looking to address a non-life-threatening growth. This procedure is ideal for patients that wish to remove a bump and or lesion that;

  • is in a visible location or that they consider unattractive.

  • is painful, rubs against clothing, or catches on items.

  • is increasing in size or changing shape, necessitating a biopsy or excision to confirm it is benign.

  • interferes with movement or daily activities.

Preparation for surgery

Shower with soap and water the night before and the morning of the procedure to reduce germs. Do not shave the area where the lump is located for at least a week prior to surgery, as this can increase infection risk. Do not apply lotions, creams, perfumes, or makeup to the area on the day of the procedure.

Procedure

The duration of the procedure may vary between 30 to 90 minutes.

Local anesthesia is injected, numbing only the immediate area, allowing the patient to remain awake. The removal technique will vary depending on the circumstance. These techniques include, but are not limited to;

  • Excision: The lesion and sometimes surrounding tissue are cut out, often used for lipomas or deep cysts.

  • Shave Removal: The growth is shaved down to skin level, often for superficial, benign growths.

  • Drainage: Cysts are drained, and the sac is removed to prevent recurrence.

Recovery

The recovery time required for this procedure is minimal, with most patients returning to normal activities immediately.

Sutures can be removed within 5–10 days.

Potential Complications

While generally safe, risks can include minor bruising, swelling, infection (1% rate reported), or bleeding.
