Intense Pulsed Light Treatments
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapy is a versatile cosmetic treatment designed to address a range of skin concerns through the use of broad-spectrum light. Essentially, it employs a concentrated beam of light to target and break down unwanted pigment—such as sunspots, age spots, and freckles—and to reduce the appearance of redness and broken capillaries. Unlike lasers, IPL emits a wider range of wavelengths, making it effective for treating multiple conditions simultaneously. It is a popular option for improving skin tone, texture, and overall radiance.
Who is a candidate?
Intense Pulse Light therapy is suitable for patients experiencing sun-damaged skin; including age spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation. It is frequently used to treat redness associated with rosacea, broken capillaries, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin after acne or injury). Individuals with mild to moderate sun damage, redness, and visible blood vessels are generally considered good candidates. However, the effectiveness of IPL can vary depending on the individual’s skin type and the severity of their condition. A consultation with our registered nurses is encouraged to determine if IPL is the appropriate treatment option.
Preparation
You will be instructed to avoid excessive sun exposure for at least two weeks leading up to the procedure. Furthermore, it’s crucial to discontinue the use of retinoids, chemical peels, and strong exfoliants for 2-4 weeks prior to treatment. Avoid tanning beds and excessive sunbathing. Inform our nurses of all medications you are currently taking, as some may require adjustment. It is also advisable to refrain from alcohol consumption for 24 hours prior to your appointment.
Procedure
During the IPL session, you will be comfortably positioned on a treatment bed. The nurse will cleanse the area to be treated and apply a cooling gel to protect your skin. She will then use the IPL device to deliver a series of pulses of light to the targeted area. You may experience a sensation similar to a snapping sensation or a warm glow. The treatment typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
Recovery
Following IPL, your skin may appear slightly pink or red for a few hours to a couple of days. Applying a soothing, hydrating moisturizer is recommended. Avoid direct sun exposure and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily. Gentle cleansing with a mild cleanser is advisable. You may experience some mild peeling or flaking over the next few days, which is normal. Our nurses will provide you with specific instructions for post-treatment care.
Potential Complications
While Intense Pulse Light therapy is generally considered safe, potential complications include redness, swelling, blistering, and pigment changes (either darkening or lightening of the skin). Individuals with darker skin tones are at a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In rare cases, infection or scarring can occur. Our team takes meticulous precautions to minimize these risks, but it is important to be aware of them before proceeding with the procedure. Open communication and diligent adherence to post-operative instructions are key to a positive outcome.
