What Is Botox?
Clostridium Botulinum Bacteria, more commonly known as Botox,
is a purified protein used to relax facial muscles that produce
dynamic wrinkles. When Botox is injected into these muscles,
the nerve impulse is blocked from reaching the intended site.
As a result, the muscle relaxes creating a soft, smooth appearance
to the overlying skin, minimizing and often eliminating visible
wrinkles.
Where Can Botox Be Injected? Frown Lines
This crease between the eyebrows can often emit a frustrated
and angry expression. Botox will soften this area and create
a more relaxed look.
Forehead Wrinkles
Wrinkles of the upper brow can be minimized creating a more
rested, relaxed appearance. It may also eliminate migraine and
tension headaches.
Crows Feet
The lines around the eyes associated with squinting can be effectively
treated with Botox. The result will produce a widening of the
eye area and a refreshed appearance.
What Is Involved in the Procedure?
The treatment is performed in the office in approximately 15-30
minutes. A fine needle is used for the injection and pain associated
with the treatment is minimal. Generally, no anaesthetic is
required and normal activities can be resumed immediately.
How Long Will a Botox Treatment Last?
This is a non- permanent treatment option for wrinkle formations
and the duration is approximately 4 months. However, after several
treatments the effects of Botox may begin to last longer.
Is it Safe?
The cosmetic use of Botox was discovered in 1987. It has been
used in wrinkle therapy for the last 6 years.
Are There Any Side Effects?
There is a potential for slight bruising and a mild transient
headache following a Botox treatment. Occasional numbness of
the forehead may last 2-3 weeks following a brow injection.
Botox treatments of the frown lines can rarely produce an upper
eyelid ptosis (eyelid droop) in 1% of injections.
