What is Artecoll?
Artecoll is an injectable implant used for the long lasting
correction of wrinkles and other skin depressions. It is composed
of tiny microspheres called polymethyl methacrylate which are
suspended in a collagen base along with lidocaine (a local anaesthetic).
How Does it Work?
Artecoll utilizes the body's natural ability to encapsulate
foreign bodies by the formation of connective tissue surrounding
the microspheres. The process of encapsulation of the microspheres
by the body's own connective tissue is complete in about 3 months.
The implant stimulates growth of the connective tissue and collagen
synthesis to increase the volume of soft tissue beneath the
depression for a more cosmetic enhancement.
What are the Indications for Use? The common uses for Artecoll are:
Lines and wrinkles of the face
Lip Augmentation
Acne scars
Nasolabial folds
Glabellar frown lines
Depressed corners of the mouth
Irregularities of the nose
Is it Permanent?
Artecoll's effects last 5 years or more, depending on the patient.
The implant remains for the life of the patient. A face-lift
can still be performed after an Artecoll implantation if desired.
What is Involved in the Procedure and
Will it be Uncomfortable?
A nerve block is commonly used for treatments of the lips and
the nasolabial region. The product itself, contains Lidocaine
(a local anaesthetic).
Pre-testing is required by Dr. Van Laeken to determine any sensitivities
to the collagen component of the product. The skin test is performed
on the inside of the arm near the elbow. A waiting period of
3 weeks is required prior to the actual injection of Artecoll.
Is it Safe?
Yes, Artecoll is safe. The polymethyl methacrylate spheres have
been used since 1936 in dental prostheses, and since 1947 when
the first hip prosthesis made from the product was introduced.
There are patients who have had implants for more than 8 years
now. Artecoll has been designed to eliminate the possibility
of migration, which was a concern with silicone in the past.
There is less than 1% incidence in the formation of granuloma
(inflammation under the skin) with Artecoll.
