Artesense / Artecoll

Artesense logoWhat is ArteSense?

ArteSense is the next generation of Artecoll® with a new & improved delivery system. It is the only permanent injectable implant used for the long-lasting correction of wrinkles and other skin depressions. ArteSense is composed of microscopic beads which are folded into a collagen solution containing anesthetic for the relief of mild post-treatment tenderness. ArteSense received approval in July 2006 and Artecoll has been approved in Canada since September 1998.

How Does it Work?

Artesense utilizes the body's natural ability to encapsulate foreign bodies by the formation of connective tissue surrounding the microspheres. The process of encapsulation of the microspheres by the body's own connective tissue is complete in about 3 months. The implant stimulates growth of the connective tissue and collagen synthesis to increase the volume of soft tissue beneath the depression for a more cosmetic enhancement.

Artesense can be used:

  • To fill in acne scar
  • To reduce wrinkles
  • To reduce smile lines
  • To reduce depressed corners of the mouth
  • In combonation with Botox

Is it Permanent?

Artesense's effects last 5 years or more, depending on the patient. The implant remains for the life of the patient. A face-lift can still be performed after an Artecoll implantation if desired.

What is Involved in the Procedure and Will it be Uncomfortable?

A nerve block is commonly used for perioral and nasolabial treatments. The product itself, contains Lidocaine (a local anaesthetic).

Pre-testing is required by Dr. Van Laeken to determine any sensitivities to the collagen component of the product. 1 in 1000 may develop a sensitivity or allergy. The skin test is performed on the inside of the arm near the elbow. A waiting period of 3 weeks is required prior to the actual injection of Artesense.

Is it Safe?

Yes, Artesense is safe. Over 400,000 patients worldwide have been safely treated. The polymethyl methacrylate spheres have been used since the 1930s for bone repair, dental work, ocular lenses, artificial limbs and pacemakers. It is a proven safe and biocompatible substance. Artesense has been designed to eliminate the possibility of migration, which was a concern with silicone in the past. There is less than 1% incidence in the formation of granuloma (inflammation under the skin) with Artesense.
